Curing Schizophrenia: A Traditional Chinese Herbal Formula Handed Down for Generations

Preface

While on vacation in the Philippines in 2016, I happened to read an article on schizophrenia. It was not until then that I realized that this illness was globally considered by the medical community to be incurable. This came as a great surprise to me. Ever since childhood, I can remember a constant stream of psychiatric patients and their concerned family members coming to the village where I was born to visit a local Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor. They came in search of a certain herbal cure made according to a secret ancestral formula. Most of the patients were completely cured within two weeks of starting these herbal pills, including a close relative of mine. Forty years later, with medical science being as advanced as it is today, how could this disease still be considered incurable? I later realized that there are millions of patients all over the world suffering from schizophrenia. Their relatives are physically exhausted, mentally worn out and constantly worried about their loved ones. Because the disease is considered incurable, governments also end up bearing high, long-term medical costs to manage it. Later on, I learned about a case that ended tragically and filled me with the determination to write this book.

I have a friend from Zhuhai, Guangdong, whose daughter had outstanding grades in high school and ranked among the top ten in her city for the college entrance examination. That year the Chinese University of Hong Kong only made three interview spots available to students from Zhuhai, and she made it onto the list. She ended up being admitted to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, a very well-known school. In her first year, her academic performance was as outstanding as ever. She was studying at a top university, had excellent grades, had her life ahead of her, and her parents were full of expectations for her future. However, a sudden romantic breakup in her second year caused her to have a mental breakdown. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospitalized for more than half a year and heavily medicated. Upon her release from the hospital, the doctor said to my friend, “Congratulations, your daughter’s condition is stable. She can go home now.” My friend, naively thinking that her daughter had completely recovered, asked the doctor, “Can my daughter go back to her studies at the university?” The doctor smiled and replied, “Of course she can!” Elated, my friend sent her daughter back to class. Everyone thought that she would get right back on track. However, returning to school was not easy. She even kept the same major, but after trying to stick it out through one semester, she had to drop out. The issue was not that her illness relapsed. Her problem was that no matter how hard she studied, she somehow could not manage to pass any of her classes. My friend suspected that the high doses of medication given to her at the hospital had caused serious and irreversible damage to her daughter’s brain and stifled her intellectual…

Curing Schizophrenia: A Traditional Chinese Herbal Formula Handed Down for Generations This book gives a detailed description of an ancient Chinese herbal formula passed down over generations and used to treat schizophrenic psychosis, though it can also be used to treat bipolar disorder and severe depression. The book details the origins of the formula, its composition, how it is prepared, precautionary notes, pharmacology, efficacy, how it was passed down as well as five concrete case studies. This formula may not be suitable for those suffering from mental illness who have already taken large amounts of western medication. This book is suitable as a reference guide for psychiatrists and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine worldwide.
